Vintage 2022: structure & power with lots of elegance and typicity
Vintage 2022: structure & power with lots of elegance and typicity
2022 was overall one of the most eventful years so far, and in the vineyard, we also experienced a special year: a dry winter, a warm May with quick blossoming, and heat and dryness in summer. Beautiful fall weather then also contributed to a harvest that began a whole two weeks earlier than usual, testing our cellar team in myriad ways. Even though the harvest began 14 days earlier than last year’s, the ripeness of the grapes leveled out again towards the end. The result was a long harvest with many additional hours of work. The perseverance of our team and our members paid out: thanks to the beautiful, mild weather in the fall, we harvested and cellared healthy, ripe grapes.
A glimpse into the cellar: varietal typicity and freshness
There was great anticipation when we were promised a first glimpse of the 2022 vintage at the beginning of January - and our enthusiasm at the end of the tasting was even greater! The wines of the Selection line already show where the 2022 vintage is headed: very straightforward, clear and honest wines without gimmickry and with a lot of elegance. To top that off, the wines have great varietal typicity and loads of freshness!
As for the wines of the TERROIR line, which are currently still in the cellar, the positive outlook continues. Our Pinot Grigio PENON is surprisingly fresh and mineral despite the warmer season thanks to the high altitude at 450-700 m! Sauvignon KOFL is particularly typical for the variety, long and vivacious, for which the work in the vineyard was decisive. The 2022 vintage of Müller Thurgau GRAUN promises more structure than in other years, but still has the typical alpine freshness and our Pinot Blanc HOFSTATT is already very precise, elegant and fruity.
Fruit and freshness set the tone for our two Pinot Noirs GLEN and MAZON as well as for the Schiava. The Pinot Noirs are already very harmonious, with beautiful fruit and soft tannins. We are especially looking forward to our SONNTALER: despite the warm temperatures in August, this Schiava convinces with a lot of fruit and vivaciousness - an ideal vintage maturing in the cellar!
Everyone's commitment to the big picture: when all the cogs mesh
The importance of our members' work in the vineyard was vitally evident in the past winegrowing year. Particularly the foliage work in summer required patience and attentiveness: due to the high temperatures, it was essential to find the right balance in order to protect the grapes on the one hand, and, at the same time, to guarantee good aeration. Also, our philosophy of working gently and supportively in the cellar has proven itself. Due to the rather warm season, the grapes were very ripe at harvest. Thanks to the decision to press them very gently, we were able to preserve a lot of fruit and the characteristic alpine freshness of our wines.
Golden Autumn for Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Cabernet Sauvignon
In the case of the ever so important Bordeaux varieties, the beautiful autumn played right into our hands: despite the earlier start of the harvest, the beautiful weather in October allowed us to delay the harvest of the Bordeaux varieties, resulting in excellent ripeness. Our top wines still have some time ahead of them in the cellar, but their fresh fruit and playful liveliness are already showing!
Aruna: the best conditions for an excellent vintage
The grapes for our Passito ARUNA 2022 were twice covered by a blanket of snow. They were able to profit optimally from the weather conditions and the resulting long ripening in the vineyard and had very nice noble rot at harvest. The basis for a promising vintage is therefore given!
Tasting a new vintage is always better than just reading about it: we look forward to welcoming you in our wine shop or at one of the wine fairs to taste the new vintage together!
